EMS Leadership Award: Nancy A. Benedetto, MS, AC

Nancy Benedetto joined the REMSCO NYC in 1990, two years later she was appointed Executive Director of Administration.  The 90’s were a difficult time for REMSCOs; many agencies were struggling financially and were still learning and testing the scope of their statutory authority. Although, many REMSCO’s had staff with EMS backgrounds, Ms. Benedetto came with another skill set that was instrumental in strengthening the NYC REMSCO. Her abilities to negotiate and find funds outside of NYSDOH has allowed the REMSCO NYC to increase the level of its staff and not only fulfill, but expand its Article 30 role. Now, in 2019 the REMSCO NYC is financially sound, an acknowledged EMS leader, and is part of this city’s emergency preparedness planning and response.

Leaders think outside the box and instill confidence in colleagues and staff. Nancy Benedetto has accomplished this, both within REMSCO and in city, state and federal based agencies. The term REMSCO is now recognized as representing expertise in EMS and Emergency Management. Because of this recognition, REMSCO NYC has been able to forge alliances with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Agency (HIDTA} Citywide Taskforce, and is working with law enforcement and NYC DOH to include EMS data as part of the battle against opioid abuse in this country.  Developing partnerships with agencies that receive federal and CDC funding has also created access to funds for training and equipment that many of our EMS Agencies might otherwise not afford.
