EMS Agency of the Year: Park Slope Volunteer Ambulance Corps

Park Slope Volunteer Ambulance Corps was formed in 1992. The organization serves a geographic area with a population of approximately 350,000 residents. Park Slope Volunteer Ambulance has over 145 active members, the majority of whom are certified as either Emergency Medical Technicians or Paramedics. The agency is a member of the New York State Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Squad Association District 4.  In addition, they are a member of the Center for Community Based Emergency Medical Services.  They are also in the process of becoming an Advanced Life Support transporting agency. Park Slope Volunteer Ambulance has made significant strides over the years to become one of the most active and professional volunteer ambulance organizations within New York City.  The dedicated members of organization have served their community for over 25 years.  Park Slope Volunteer Ambulance has become a mainstay within the New York City 911 system and has helped thousands of New Yorkers in their time of need. Park Slope Volunteer Ambulance has trained many of their members and has assisted them to advance in their careers.

Their members have included Vincent Variale, President, District Council 37, Local 3621, Uniformed EMS Officers Union, and Dale Garcia, Associate Director, NYU Lutheran Ambulance Department. Park Slope Volunteer Ambulance provides EMS mutual aid assistance to major citywide public events held yearly, including the NYC Marathon, 5 Borough Bike Tour, and citywide disaster preparation and training provided by the New York City Office of Emergency Management.  They have responded to many citywide and community emergencies throughout the years: The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the 2011 New York City snowstorm, and the evacuation efforts for Hurricane Irene and Super Storm Sandy.
